America has some of the best institutions of learning in the world. Big name universities like Harvard, Yale, and Stanford are rivaled around the world by prospective students. If you are a citizen of another country, you might dream of completing a degree in the US. The process of applying for a student visa (labelled F1 for non-vocational schools) may seem complex, but Aventura immigration attorney can help guide you every step of the way. The legal process generally follows these steps:
Get Admitted into an SEVP-Certified School – Not every US university accepts foreign students. Only schools with a Student and Exchange Visitor Program will have necessary programs to accommodate you and your studies. You can search for these schools and apply following their specific admission requirements. Once you are admitted, the school will send you a Form I-20, which serves as documentation of enrollment.
Complete a DS-160 – You’ll need to electronically complete documentation called a DS-160. This will ask basic questions that will be used by the embassy to process your visa. Part of this will require you to upload a picture of yourself that has to follow guidelines given by the State Department. You must print this document and present it at your visa interview.
Schedule your Visa Interview – Schedule an interview as soon as possible with the US embassy in your country. There can be a considerable wait time to be interviewed, so the sooner the better! This requires a non-refundable fee and you must bring all of the required documentation, generally including a passport, DS-160 form, visa application fee receipt, and your Form I-20. For this step you should follow the instructions on the US embassy’s website in your country.
Attend your Visa Interview – Don’t stress at this point! This interview is just to review your documentation and ensure you a serious candidate that qualifies for obtaining a visa. This interview will be held at your nation’s US embassy.
