Alimony Can Be Expensive

Almost everyone fantasizes about meeting that one special person; falling in love and getting married, and living the rest of their days together in wedded bliss. Romantic comedies do a great job of selling that image, as do some pop culture celebrities. Celebrity couples like Freddie Prinze, Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar, Will and Jada Pinkett Smith and Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell just to name a few. But what happens when the honeymoon period is over and reality sets in? What happens when you look at the person next to you and realize the romance has fizzled and “poof!” disappeared? Or even worse, what happens if your significant other decides to be unfaithful, or maybe even abusive? It’s time to exit that marriage….pronto!

There are many things to consider when getting a divorce. Who gets what…who lives where…who pays whom alimony? Unlike celebrities, the average person doesn’t have the luxury of getting divorced willy-nilly. There are real life consequences  to consider. Some divorces leave people in dire financial straits. Rupert Murdoch and his wife Anna split, she walked away with $1.7 billion, $110 million being in cash.

In a situation like that, alimony isn’t a big deal because they are billionaires. Not everyone is so lucky. That’s why finding an attorney who knows how to skillfully negotiate alimony settlements is imperative if you find yourself terminating your marriage. Many couples can do it amicably, but others need a third party. It is especially important if one party is either the caretaker of the home; cannot or does not work, or makes significantly less than the other party. That party has become accustomed to a certain standard of living, and not being able to maintain that standard of living can be stressful, to say the least.

Most people don’t get married with the intention of getting a divorce. But sometimes things just don’t work out. You want to make sure you are well taken care of if you find yourself calling it splits, especially if it has been a long-term marriage. The key is to come to an agreement both parties feel comfortable with. In the end, you will be dependent on that person to follow through with alimony payments, so being civil is the best way to go. Emotions can run high, and the last thing you want to do is say or do something that jeopardizes your chances of being fairly compensated.

Stephanie G. Morrow and Associates, P.A . specialize in alimony cases and will be able to guide you through the process as painlessly as possible. No one counts on getting a divorce, but when it does happen you need someone in your corner who will fight to protect your financial future.

If you need an alimony attorney, give Stephanie G. Morrow and Associates, P.A. a call. Unless you are married to a billionaire who doesn’t mind giving you half of their belongings, it is the right thing to do.
